Andrew "Goatfury" Smith, instructor at Revolution BJJ in Richmond's West End, won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Andrew took first place in the Masters' Brown Belt division, defeating three opponents on his way to the top of the podium.
Andrew defeated his first opponent, Carioca BJJ's Anderson Souza, with a brabo choke. After passing Souza's guard, Andrew set up the brabo choke from reverse kesa getame.
Moving on to the semi-finals, Andrew was matched up with Joseph "Kimura Joe" Christopher, from NTMMA. After being ahead by advantage, Andrew was swept for two points, but went for a leglock, setting up a sweep. Ultimately, he defeated Joe by advantage in the closest match of the day.
Andrew faced Rafael Carrao, from Rigan Machado's school, in the finals. Once again, Andrew controlled his opponent for the entire match, and won this match on points. Andrew's students, Tommy Yun, Brian Linzy, and Chrissy Linzy, were on hand to witness the victory.
Earning a medal at the Pan American Games is something that most Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners strive to do. Before winning the gold medal in 2008, Andrew also earned a silver medal in 2003 and a bronze medal in 2004.
