Women's Self-Defense
Self-Defense class specifically geared to women's needs and concerns.
The women's self defense classes will be taught using Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Andrew Smith is an accomplished Judo black belt and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on ground fighting techniques. The ground is typically the position where women are the most vulnerable. Rebekah Carrow, who will also be teaching, has been studying martial arts since age 8, and is a black belt in Okinawan Kempo and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Rebekah is certified in women-specific self-defense systems and is employed by the Safe Harbor Domestic Abuse Shelter.
The class will be open to women and girls that are ages 12 and up. The eight week class is only $99. There are group discounts available, if five or more women register together. Mothers and daughters coming to class together will also receive a discount.
Previous participant, Judy Fournier, says, "The class was extremely beneficial for any woman. The situational exercises gave ideas on how to escape a bad situation. I would highly recommend this class for all women who want to feel safer when alone."
BJJ Basics Class
Revolution BJJ is now offering a class specifically catered towards beginners to jiu jitsu. This "BJJ Basics" class emphasises the fundamental movements and techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
The class meets every Wednesday at 6:30 PM and lasts one hour. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a low-impact cardio workout structured around self-defense techniques. For more information, call (804) 502-2172.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is primarily a grappling system that utilizes chokes, joint locks, and ground compliance techniques to control your opponent. BJJ has recently been made popular through "ultimate fighting" and mixed martial tournaments.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a sophisticated extension of pre-1925 Kodokan Judo (known then as ju-jitsu). It arrived in Brazil when Mitsuyo Maeda first brought it with him during his visit to Brazil with the hopes of establishing a Japanese colony/community in the country. It was further developed by the Gracie family during the mid-20th century. The primary difference between Judo, Japanese Jujitsu, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the focus on ground fighting and ground grappling. In addition, like Judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu encourages "randori" or free sparring against a live, resisting opponent. Thus, students have an opportunity to test their skills and develop them under realistic conditions, with minimal risk of injury. BJJ is trained both with and without a judo or Jiu Jitsu gi.
