-Justin “Big Jus” Kornfeld, current student

“I have been a student at Revolution BJJ since July 2006. After my first class, I was hooked! Andrew Smith, owner of the school provides instruction in a way that is team oriented, fun and emphasizes proper technique. Since joining the school, I have lost over 50+ pounds and my waist size has dropped from a 44 all the way down to 34!  In addition to strengthening my core, my overall level of fitness has improved tremendously!  This is a great workout and a great way to learn self-defense applications at the same time!  I could not have done it without Revolution BJJ and Andrew!”

As a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt that specializes in Vale Tudo and Mixed Martial Arts training and competitions, I decided it was time to ‘up the ante’ in my Sport BJJ and No-Gi Submission Wrestling game.  I began asking around the BJJ Community for possible people to train with in the Virginia area and ALL fingers pointed towards Andrew Smith.  I contacted him, and after our first ‘meeting on the mat’, I was so impressed with his knowledge and skills that I host him for seminars at my academy on a regular basis and train with him when time permits.  His instruction is precise, detailed, and easy to understand.  If you’re a student of his, consider yourself extremely lucky.  And if you’re not…well, you’re missin’ out!

Trey and I both come from a wrestling background and his Jiu-Jitsu training style just “clicks” with me. I have travelled all over the world while in the military and for security purposes, and I have never received such complete and thorough attention to detail in my training as I have with Trey. His approach to technique is to break down each position and the important details that are involved. He then goes over “why” these details are so important. He transcends from the beginning to the end of each move in an easy to understand style.

Trey Martin and I have trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu together since I started six years ago. He has been a constant support and friend through all that time. Through his guidance, my wrestling game has vastly improved. He knows the most wicked jiu-jitsu techniques I have ever seen so working with him is always rewarding.

I’ve been training BJJ for over 5 years.  I’m currently a purple belt under Phil and Ricardo Migliarese at Balance Studios.  I’ve been lucky to have Andrew as a friend, occasional traning partner, and grappling resource over the last several years.  Andrew is someone who I discuss jiu-jitsu with on a regular basis and my knowledge of the sport is all the greater for it.  In addition, Andrew’s knowledge of all things grappling are remarkable.  His knowledge of the the game, rules, and strategy make him an excellent coach.  Talking and trading ideas, tips, and techniques with Andrew has made me a better grappler.  He has no secrets, and developing his students is his number one priority.  God forbid, if I were ever to live in Richmond, Andrew Smith would be my coach.

” Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has not only helped me get in shape, it has also given me excellent tools for self defense. Training at Revolution BJJ has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Andrew Smith goes out of his way to make women feel welcome in class, and to make sure that everyone understands the techniques before moving to the next one. I can’t imagine a better place for women to learn a martial art, or one that will be as effective.”

I started training about three years ago, 1 week after becoming a Dad. Having the time to commit to physical exercise was always a challenge for me. After my first BJJ class I was hooked! I have since lost 35lbs and am in the best shape I’ve been since my Marine Corps days. Jiu-Jitsu has become an excellent way to escape the stresses of a typical desk-bound routine. And with 3 Children now, it’s a great way to get away. Thanks to Andrew, I’m able to balance a hectic schedule and get the most out of my training time.

Ive known Andrew for five years now, his dedication to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is only matched by his dedication to his friends and students. Anyone in the Richmond area would greatly benefit from the knowledge and love he has of BJJ. I highly recommend stopping by and checking out a class.
